CNN reports today that President Obama and the First Family have decided on the breed of dog to add to their family. The two canine contenders, as listed by The New York Times shortly before President Obama’s Inauguration, were a labradoodle (an adorable cross between a labrador and a poodle), and a Portuguese water hound. And the winner is…a Portuguese water hound.
CNN reports that First Lady Michelle Obama decided to adopt the Portuguese water dog due to its medium-size and good nature. The breed is allegedly hypoallergenic, a must, Mrs. Obama said, due to her daughter, Malia’s, allergy to dogs. The family will choose their dog during their spring break vacation.
All that remains is for the family to name the pup. To date, Mrs. Obama does not like her daughters’ suggestions.
There are names floating around, and they’re bad,” Mrs. Obama said in an interview with People Magazine. “You listen and you go – like, I think, Frank was one of them. Frank! Moose was another one of them. Moose. I said, well, what if the dog isn’t a moose? Moose. I’m like, no, come on, let’s work with the names a little bit.”Many people believe that the choice of dog is a clue to the owner’s true personality. Consequently, then, had President Obama chosen a labradoodle, he would have shown himself to be intelligent, graceful, adaptable, even tempered, a true classic. His choice of Portuguese water dog, however, supposedly reveals him to be an active, working man, loving, sweet, a “guard dog” who will defend his territory.
The White House certainly could use a Portuguese water dog nowadays!
