A Dog Named Spirit

I see you,
peering through
my window in dusky gloom.
Your eyes
ambered depths
swirl Want,
pull Need,
with that certain Yearning
thirsty sufferings consume.
By the light of my lamp,
your graying muzzle
firmly set against the night.
Life’s been hard all winter.
You only want to feel my light.
And I, who see your needing,
am filled with needing you.
