Breed Buster!

This week, Dogpawfile Magazine launches a new monthly column, Breed Buster! Ever wonder if your purebred pup matches the breed temperament criteria of the American Kennel Club? Breed Buster examines the various breeds, and then consults the experts – YOU – to determine if the generally accepted standard is accurate. We begin with one of the most popular breed of dogs, the Yorkshire Terrier.

According to the AKC, “Yorkshire Terriers, affectionately known as “Yorkies,” offer big personalities in a small package. Though members of the Toy Group, they are terriers by nature and are brave, determined, investigative and energetic. They have long, luxurious blue and tan coats. This portable pooch is one of the most popular breeds according the AKC® Registration Statistics.”

Reportedly, Yorkies are lively, courageous, stubborn, affectionate with its master, suspicious of strangers, and not very sociable with other animals. Despite their gentle nature, they make good watchdogs, and have a tendency to bite. They are sometimes hard to potty train.

Is this description true, or false? Let’s consult the experts.

Millie fits the description! She's a yorkie through and through!

Millie says: We are all very gentle and loving and loyal…LOYAL FUR SURE! We follow Mummy around everywhere she goes. We would never DREAM of staying in a room by ourselves while she goes off somewhere else….WE MUST GO WITH HER! We bark at any strangers that enter our yard…don’t like them at all! I will admit that I have nipped someone on the ankle once when they came around the corner of the yard unannounced….it scared me a bit, and I charged up to him. He was wearing long pants, so he wasn’t injured. He just looked down at me, and then back up at my Mummy with a look that said, “Is she for real???!!!” Well, you BET I was for real….5 more minutes alone with him, and he would have been mince meat! I got a very bad whipping for that one. So yes…suspicious of strangers. Stubborn….oh gosh…I hate to use that word….how about we have a mind of our own!?! BOLBOLBOL!

Tonja, the Four Yorkies’ Mom, has this to say: I don’t agree with all, but agree with some. 1. stubborn- don’t agree. Our’s listen pretty well, and do what they are told. 2. loving- very very loving little dogs. 3. loyal – yes, they are loyal 4. suspicious of strangers- they will let you know someone is here but then they will be all over them to be petted. 5.gentle- yes they are that 6. bite- I have not found that to be true with any of ours. They are said to be very hard to potty train; I didn’t find that to be true either.

Tonja reports that her yorkies are loving, and obedient.

In summary, Twink’s Mommy sent this poem that, in her opinion, describes the Yorkshire Terrier.

There are many little terrier dogs
Of every size and hue,
But the one I’d like to mention here
Is shaded tan and blue.
He’s a cocky little devil
And he isn’t any saint,
But a sappy little lap-dog
Is the very thing he ain’t!
He struts along the garden path
His eyes boot-button bright,
And God help any straying cat
That comes into his sight.
His owners fear no burglars
For every sound he hears,
The softest, quietest footsteps
Will not pass his pricked up ears.
And if he is disturbed at night
Or danger is at hand,
He makes more of a racket
Than a fifty piece brass band!
